What is Cottonization?
Cottonization transforms long, coarse bast fibers into short staple fibers compatible with cotton processing β carding, drawing, rotor or ring spinning. Two barriers prevent raw banana fiber from processing on cotton systems: variable fiber length (too long for short-staple ring spinning) and surface chemistry (residual pectin and lignin prevent carding web formation).
